Understanding Physiotherapy: What to Expect

Physiotherapy is one of the most widely used forms of healthcare in the UK, yet many patients are unsure what to expect from their first appointment. Whether you've been referred by your GP, seen a consultant, or self-referred directly to our team at Longfield Polyclinic, understanding the process can help you get far more from your treatment.

At your first session, your physiotherapist will conduct a thorough assessment. This includes a detailed discussion of your symptoms, medical history, and lifestyle — followed by a physical examination of the affected area. You may be asked to perform certain movements to assess your range of motion, strength, and function. This assessment forms the foundation of your individualised treatment plan.

Treatment itself varies enormously depending on your condition. It may include hands-on manual therapy such as joint mobilisation or soft tissue work, guided therapeutic exercises, electrotherapy such as ultrasound or TENS, or specialist techniques such as shockwave therapy or dry needling. Your physiotherapist will explain each element and the reasoning behind it.

Continuity of care is central to good physiotherapy outcomes. Most conditions require between three and eight sessions, though this varies by diagnosis and severity. Our team will set clear goals with you, track your progress, and adapt your plan as you improve. Between sessions, most patients are given home exercise programmes to accelerate their recovery.
