The Complete Guide to Back Pain Treatment

Back pain is common, but it should never be dismissed as something patients simply have to live with. Pain may come from muscles, joints, discs, nerves, posture, workload, activity changes or a combination of factors. A careful physiotherapy assessment helps identify the most likely drivers and the safest starting point for treatment.

The first appointment usually explores where the pain is felt, how long it has been present, what aggravates it, what eases it and whether symptoms travel into the leg. Your clinician will also check movement, strength, flexibility and any warning signs that need medical review or imaging.

Treatment can include education, hands-on therapy, progressive exercise, pacing advice, ergonomic guidance and rehabilitation for work, sport or daily activities. Some patients also benefit from related services such as pain management, diagnostic imaging or private GP review if symptoms are complex or not improving as expected.

Most back pain improves with the right plan, but recovery is rarely one-size-fits-all. The goal is to reduce pain, rebuild confidence, restore movement and help patients understand how to lower the chance of flare-ups in the future.
